Last Friday, school winners from the Delta Poetry Competition from Y7 and Y8 visited Education House for this year’s Poetry Celebration Event and for the announcement of this year’s overall trust winners.

In 2023, Serlby Park’s Harry F (Y8) was awarded 2nd place overall in the Year 7 competition. We are very proud to announce that Iris M (Y7) has continued Serlby’s winning streak, placing 1st in the overall Year 7 competition for 2024!

The judges had the following to say about Iris’ poem:

We love the way Iris honestly portrays loss. The way Iris plays with the poem’s structure to convey the stages of grief – to represent the way grief feels with the passing of time – is very clever.

This poem reminds the reader of the pain associated with grief – whilst also giving the reader hope to look to the future. Iris, you should be more than proud of what you’ve achieved.

Attendees were also lucky enough to hear a talk from author Darren Simpson – whose novels Scavengers and Furthermoor form part of Serlby Park’s Reading Routes offering for Key Stage 3 students – and see a performance by award-winning freestyle rapper Rob Bradley.

Students then composed their own rap using the skills Rob had taught them. Billy F (Y7) performed a fantastic rap about bourbon biscuits on stage in front of the whole competition!

A huge congratulations to Iris and all our winners – we couldn’t be more proud!
