Within Health and Social Care, we believe that students deserve a broad and ambitious curriculum. Students will develop their knowledge and understanding by studying several areas which fall into the health and social care sector. Students will apply their learning skills in the contexts of different settings such as early years, health care, and social care. Students are supported and encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning and develop skills that are essential for the modern- day workplace such as effective communication skills, essential first aid, and understanding the core principles of care. The students will experience working to deadlines; working from a prescribed brief; and presenting information effectively; and accurately.
Students will develop:
• Opportunities to gain a broad understanding and knowledge of the Health and Social Care sector.
• Give students are more focused understanding of health and social care through the selection of optional specialist units.
• Leadership & Character – participate in lesson through collaborative learning structures; work together in pairs, groups and teams. Lead peers and through different topics develop self-esteem, confidence, and resilience.
• Give students the opportunity to develop a range of personal skills and techniques, through the selection of units that are essential for successful performance in working life.
• Knowledge/Theory – Develop an understanding of ‘human life span development’, and the importance of ‘health and social care values in the work sector’. Students will develop vocabulary and support knowledge through role-play.
• Lessons that will be stimulated, progressive and differentiated. They will be challenging whilst supporting the needs of all students.

R032: Principles of care in health and social care settings.
Assessment type: External 1 hour and 15 exam
The focus of this unit is to examine key aspects of working in health and social care settings. You will learn about the ways of supporting service users; right and using effective communication skills so that you can provide person-centred care. You will also learn about ways of valuing diversity and providing equal opportunities in order to meet the needs of service users who are using care settings. It is essential that care environments are safe, healthy, hygienic, and secure. This unit explores the measures and procedures that are needed to protect service users who use health and social care services.

R033: Supporting individuals through life events.
Assessment type: Internal
This unit examines the life stages from 5 to 65+ years, through childhood, adolescence, adulthood and older adulthood. Everyone’s life is different, and many different factors affect life stages in varying ways. You are going to look at the changes associated with the development from childhood to older adulthood and the factors that can influence this development. You will examine expected and unexpected life events and the effect they can have on an individual’s life. You will also research how individuals can be supported by service providers and practitioners.

R034: Creative and therapeutic activities
Assessment type: Internal
In this unit you will learn about the different types of creative and therapeutic activities that are available, and the different needs these activities address for children and young people, adults and older adults. You will also learn about the many benefits of participating in creative and therapeutic activities and how to encourage positive experiences for all those who take part in and support them. Creative activities require careful planning and delivery if people and groups are to benefit from them. You will have an opportunity to plan and carry out a creative activity suitable for a person or group in a health and social care setting. You will also gain the knowledge and skills required to review a creative activity and make suggestions for improvements.
